402203 VU Politikwissenschaftliche Schwerpunktsetzung 2: Protestbewegungen
In this course we will discuss the options available for citizens who politically disagree. The course literature focuses on contentious politics, social movement organisations and (counter-)insurgency strategies. We will study the toolbox of rebels and protestors who engage in a claim-making act, and the toolbox of the targeted government. This course will be a ‘dialogue between ideas and evidence’ (Ragin 1997) as we will continuously compare theory with empirical cases. We will combine the theories from the literature with documentary analysis in the classes. Students will give a presentation and write an essay. This course will be taught in English.
