The objective of the PhD seminar is to support students who are already well ahead in their PhD studies in their on-going work on their PhD thesis. The seminar provides an opportunity for students to present their work-in-progress (i.e., working paper or chapter) to faculty and other students and to receive feedback on it. Students can use the seminar to clarify and discuss questions of theoretical positioning, contributions, methodology and research design, empirical strategies, data analysis, dealing with literature, academic writing, etc.
Students must present a working paper or a full (main) chapter (in case of a monography). This paper/chapter must be well-developed, and either submitted as single authored or, if co-authored, with an own significant contribution. Before the introductory session students will submit their paper/chapter to the course instructors to give them the opportunity to understand if the paper/chapter meets the course requirements. Detailed information about the process will be given via email after students are enrolled in the course.
In the introductory session, presentation slots and discussion slots will be assigned. Each student will have to present their own work and will have to discuss (in written and oral form) the work of a fellow student. For the own presentation, students can choose what they want to focus on to guide the feedback process most effectively. All students are expected to read all papers/chapters to be able to actively participate in class discussions.
Detailed information about the course will be given in the introductory session, which is mandatory to attend. Students who do not attend the introductory session (or fail to tell this the course instructors beforehand) will be removed from the course. In general, attendance at every session is mandatory.
