Reading and evaluating subject-specific sources and depictions of contemporary history; recognition of historical-scientific issues, perceptions of history and historical narratives; reading and evaluating historiographical texts as well as their analysis as historical sources.
One of the central aspects of the Zionst project in the 19th and 20th centuries was to discover and understand the Land of Israel through the tools of modern science. The goal of this course is to analyze the Zionist ideologies before and after the establishment of the state of Israel through the prism of different scientific disciplins, such as sociology, history, religious-sciences, archeology or economy. Through discussions and presentations in class we will understand better the Zionist movement from a new yet central perspective.
Reading, oral presentations with handout, seminar paper, discussion; teacher's lecture.
Course with continuous performance assessment: attendance at all sessions, regular and active participation in discussions (oral and written), oral presentation with handout, seminar paper (max. 5 pages).
Reading list will be provided.
The completion of the compulsory module fundamentals is recommended.
Although the readings and discussions will be in English, both presentations and final essays could be held/written in German.
