To gain the ability and confidence to apply common scientific data processing, analysis and visualisation methods to geoscience data using the python programming language. Hands-on experience working with diverse geoscience datasets.

A basic introduction to the python programming language and important software libraries. Theoretical background and hands-on examples using python for: data processing, time series analysis, visualisation, numerical modelling and machine learning.

Class sessions will be mixed lectures introducing theory with integrated hands-on and interactive lab sessions and group work. The labs will introduce real geoscience data from the UIBK geology institute along with sample scripts and instructions for analysing, processing and visualising the data.

Course assessment will comprise two project assignments: a short mid-term project contributing 20% and a final project contributing 80%. Both assessments will be submitted as python “jupyter notebooks” which combine code, text and figures.

Experience with computer programming in general and python in particular is useful but not required.
