• Identify the important developments regarding gender, sexuality, sex, race, and space from the Early Modern period to the present.
• Evaluate and communicate historical knowledge of primary and/or secondary source material through analytical written essays.
• Cultivate critical thinking and interpretive skills about gender, sexuality, sex, race, and space in historical contexts.

The course will trace the evolving concepts of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality across different temporal, geographic, and affective boundaries. It will focus on the construction and normalization of racial and sexual identities, the experiences of women and men, the shifting racial and sexual attitudes and practices, the formation of raced, gendered, and sexed spaces, the redefinition of womanhood and manhood, the transformations of the family and marriage, the development of racial and sexual politics and activism, the hegemony of colonialism, and many other themes. We will examine how women as well as men often challenged, reaffirmed, and transformed ideas about race and gender and how these acts and practices often intersected with the concepts of class, space, nation, and empire. In doing so, we will learn about the different meanings of race and gender and in what ways they mattered in the modern world.
