After successful completion of the lecture, students are able to read critically and deconstruct different narratives of Europe. They will have a deeper understanding of
- The History of Europe
- The political, social and cultural construction of the EU
- Processes of integration: strategies and mechanisms of political, social and cultural inclusion and exclusion
- Various reasons for war and conflict in Europe (religion, economy, colonialism etc.)
- Representations of Europe in texts, museums, festivities and rituals
Students examine the historical and contemporary roles, interconnections, and differential effects of human organizations and actions on global systems within the human and the natural worlds. They demonstrate partial understanding of the complexity of elements important to members of another culture in relation to its history, values, politics, communication styles, economy, or beliefs and practices. Students are able to questions assumptions and identify relevant contexts when presenting a position. After successful completion of the lecture, students identify own and others' assumptions and relevant contexts when presenting a position.
This course introduces students into studying the visions and challenges of Europe and European integration in the making. Trans-European conflict, cooperation and integration is addressed from a historical and contemporary perspective: We look at the historical constitution of Europe, its political institutions, societal objectives and symbolic representations in media, film, literature, popular culture and arts. In six learning units, we will cover
- The European Union: History and Current Challenges
- Migration and Mobility
- Philosophical and Political Concepts of Europe
- War and Conflict in Europe
- Imagined Others and Memory Cultures
- Narratives of Europe in film, literature and arts
The topics will be presented with lectures, learning experiments (eg Power Point Karaoke) and discussed in small workshop groups. Students will be invited to read and carefully prepare texts and work on exercises and assignments individually and in groups.

The lecture is an Aurora Alliance (AURORA – Universität Innsbruck (uibk.ac.at)) event.
Furthermore the course 800861 "Perspectives on Europe in a Global Context" is the first core course of the Aurora joint educational program "Understanding of Europe". The joint educational program consists of two core courses (5 ECTS credits each, taught in English) and an area of specialisation (20 ECTS credits). The second core course is planned for the summer semester 2023.
Students of all Aurora universities (incl. Bachelor students of Universität Innsbruck) are invited to apply for participation in this lecture from 16.
