In this design studio, students will obtain knowledge and experience with the urban and architectural design process, in connection with getting to know and exercise development, representation and presentation of an idea.
UNIVERSICALITY - vertical university campus
This year's design studio will continue the development of innovative highrise typologies, looking at contemporary urban density conditions, society's increasing complexity, and comprehensive functional programs, thus understanding the skyscraper as the built result of society's cultural expression.
Students will look into the traditionally horizontally organized typology of the university campus in terms of its functions, layouts and organization in oder to re-organize them to develop into a vertical university campus.
Students will look into oganizational properties such as
Porosity - volume / void
Density - foam / bubbles / packing
Granularity - subdivisions / fractal qualities
Connectivity - circulation / networks / accessibility
Transparency - transparent / opaque / degrees of transparency
Privacy - public / privat
Initial research will focus on the analysis of selected highrise buildings and unversity campi.
** EINFÜHRUNG: 04.03.2020 - 13:00
** ERSTER TERMIN: 13.03.2020 - 11:30, dann jeden Donnerstag
Students will work in groups and present and discuss their material once a week in a desk crit or powerpoint presentation.
Design research will include both, analogue and digital techniques, presentations and models.
Students' progress on research, model building, digital modelling skills and design will be constantly evaluated, putting the focus on specific milestones, such as quarter review (end of research and model buidling phase) and miterm review. Students will present their final design to a jury at the end of the year and submit this digital presentation and (3d-printed) models for grading. Final Grading will assess the quantity and quality of presentation, design, research, and model
A list of relevant literature will be provided.
