Graduates gain theoretical knowledge and application-orientated understanding in order to apply both when developing concepts for spatial installations, urban interventions or other artistic forms. They are able to use, implement and alter existing tools in order to expand their artistic and design agenda.

The VU “Art, Design & Emerging Technologies” provides students with knowledge, skills and competencies in the field of design, art and emerging technologies with an emphasis on cross-disciplinary precedents and applications. The discussion focuses on the discourse and contexts of contemporary practice in design, art and architecture, and on a creative and innovative utilization of state-of-the -art technologies.

Abstract:

We are living in the age of digitalization and augmentation. Equipped with computers in our pockets, digital information is influencing our behavior and enhancing our capabilities in previously unimaginable ways. With the arrival of spatial computing, which enables digital interfaces to inhabit our physical environments, there is now an opportunity to rethink the framework for how design and architecture interact with tomorrow’s digital realities. These new augmented conditions offer creatives an opportunity to blur the boundaries between digital and physical aspects of design and architecture, creating new dynamic positions from which we affect the experience of our surroundings. Through the creation of a series of digital injections relating to Swarovski & Wattens, the advanced design studio will explore and speculate on how spatial computing can occupy and transform the urban spaces surrounding the campus. The participants will be introduced to the toolsets necessary for developing their own augmented reality app and become familiar with techniques for how to add virtual properties to physical places, manipulating forms, materiality, functions, etcetera in the process. The advanced design studio will culminate in a virtual exhibition on-site, where participants and visitors will be able to experience the augmented creations
