The course addresses the importance of digitization, how digital technologies influence traditional business models and create new business models. Different aspects of digitization are highlighted, whereby not only opportunities but also challenges of digital technologies are analyzed and discussed. The course consists of three main thematic parts; Digital Transformation, Platform Business and Blockchain Business. In general, the course guides through the different phases of the digitization area. Starting with transforming an existing business process to a digitized one, creating new business models by means of platforms and then transforming those platform business models into decentralized organizations through blockchain technology.  

 

Digital Transformation:

This topic provides an introduction to the field of digital transformation. It leads through strategies and procedures how to implement new digital technologies into existing parts of a business. Analyzing and converting processes by means of IT-Projectmanagement, implementing Service Oriented Architectures and valuing flexible IT-Projects using a Real Option Approach.

 

Platform Business:

This section begins with a general introduction to platform business models. Analyzing how traditional business models have been replaced by a platform structure. Characteristics of a platform business model are discussed and studied (structure, network effects, etc.). Critical aspects of the platform business model such as the danger of monopolization and governmental intervention are highlighted as well.

 

Blockchain Business:

First of all, this topic provides an overview of the blockchain technology and the state of the art. The motivations for implementing blockchain technology based business models are discussed. In more detail the functionality of blockchain business is analyzed and examined from a game theoretical perspective. Finally, existing and possible future applications of the blockchain are addressed.
