Acquisition of advanced knowledge in Austrian history in the time span between 1526 and 1918/1938.

The course intends to provide the participants with a deeper understanding for the historical developments in the Austrian/Habsburgs territories starting with 1526. It will cover the Early Modern Period with the problems resulting from the wars against the Ottoman Empire and the spread of Reformation. A strong focus is on the period of enlightened absolutism that is the reign of Maria Theresa and Joseph II. 1848 is a milestone of Austrian and European history that needs more consideration. The era of Franz Joseph will be studied (prison of “nations” or laboratory of modernity?) as well as the transformation to a small Republic.
